Drawn to the Suffolk/Essex coast. Kate has frequented Orfordness, cared for by the National Trust. The vast striated shingle spit of the Ness bursts with flora, the meandering silvery Stony Ditch, a tributary of the river Ore that separates the marshland area of the grazing meadows and dykes. In September 2025 as the samphire turns a remarkable magenta colour she returned there to walk and draw. She joined an overnight stay, painting from “ Dusk to Dawn.” From Basecamp at Bailey Bridge she set off to Bomb Ballistics building, to the South the ‘labs’ of the former nuclear test site. Some with pagoda shaped roofs reminiscent of those on horizons she was familiar with in Myanmar. These are of a non religious kind. To the North ‘Cobra Mist’ surrounded by radio masts designed to detect incoming missiles during the Cold War. The water filled dykes glistened on a moonlit night and the blazing sunrise appeared to flow molten gold along the wet Stony Ditch. Kate discovered that painting with a head torch could facilitate capture of these magical moments. She is currently working on a body of work and these are initial explanations.
